RocketHour CodeQuest 2025

Project Overview

When kids have access to nature, they respect it and protect it. That’s the idea behind Cape Town Kids Safari, an interactive website I developed to help children discover and connect with the incredible range of wildlife living right here in Cape Town. I am nuts about protecting nature and building this website is something I have been dreaming about for a while now. With a zoomable map, animal scavenger hunt, species cards, eco-challenges, quizzes and fun themed games, kids can explore nearly 50 local species on Cape Town Kids Safari. They can also find out how we can live alongside wildlife instead of harming it. There are also tips on how to explore safely (for the benefit of both kids and wildlife!). The site is designed to be fun, visual, bite-size educational and accessible to everyone – especially children in under-resourced communities who may never have the opportunity to go on a 'real' big-5 safari, but also tourists visiting Cape Town who may not realise how much wild wonder Cape Town holds. Each species features a scientifically accurate drawing, a story, and clues about where you might spot it and how difficult it is to spot! Kids can also connect to real conservation heroes or organisations doing amazing work. And they can learn practical, kid-friendly ways to help: from seed-bombing sidewalks with wildflowers, to fixing wildlife corridors, and keeping wetlands clean. I built this project because I believe the next generation of wildlife heroes starts with curiosity and connection. A lot of technology pulls kids into gaming and mindless distractions, but Cape Town Kids Safari tries to do the opposite: using tech and AI to help kids explore the real world and solve real-world problems. I poured my heart into this project and I hope you have fun exploring! I’d love to keep working on it, like connect it to a server for the login and activate TokTokkie, my AI-powered, kid-friendly virtual ranger chatbot.

RocketHour AI CodeQuest 2025

The RocketHour AI CodeQuest is an intensive five day holiday experience that introduces students in Grades 5 - 7 to the fundamentals of AI-assisted Web Development. Over the course of five lessons, students learn to build simple HTML websites with the use of Github Copilot - the AI tool bundled with the VS Code IDE. Students practice AI promoting techniques, study the various elements that make up a modern website and learn to deploy their sites publicly so they can be shared with the world. The course culminates with a final project - an opportunity for participants to put their skills the the test. The project required students to independently build a website that solves a problem or satisfies a need. The problem or need can be one that the student faces themselves or belongs to a member of the community. Students go on to document their learning journey with three portfolio videos and a short written overview of their project.

Tutor Comment

Loïc created an incredible project. Cape Town Kids Safari stood out most in its craftsmanship ,every part of the website was carefully thought through and executed with skill and attention to detail. The storytelling, strong concept, and technical polish came together to create a standout experience. A unique project title on the portfolio site would have taken it to the next level, but overall this project was truly exceptional and beautifully made. Loïc, you absolutely smashed it! You jumped into this challenge with confidence, creativity, and so much heart and it shows in every part of your site. Be proud of what you’ve built. You’ve made something joyful, thoughtful, and full of personality. Amazing work! 👏🌟
